Call Me By Your Name

The Writers Guild of America honored the best screenplays and television scripts of 2017 last night, with Get Out and Call Me By Your Name taking home top honors for the movie categories. Both winners are also nominees in the same respective categories for the Oscars this year, and the Academy could follow suit with their picks next month.

Get Out received the WGA Award for Best Original Screenplay, but this isn’t a guarantee that writer/director Jordan Peele will take the Oscar, since its main competition, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, was not qualified for a WGA nomination. The WGA winner has also won the Oscar 14 times in the last 20 years, with Moonlight winning for original at the WGAs and adapted at the Academy Awards.

Call Me By Your Name won the WGA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, and this likely does cement the movie as the Oscar winner. It’s been a frontrunner before this weekend, and it also took home the USC Scripter Award on Saturday ahead of the WGAs, too. The winner in this category has seen a repeat at the WGA Awards and Oscars only 12 times in the last 20 years, though the Scripter Award winner has taken the Oscar nine of the last 10 years.

Do these wins mean anything for Best Picture predicting? While it is rare for the Oscar winner for Best Picture to not also win one of the screenplay categories, in the last 20 years we’ve seen it done with The ArtistMillion Dollar BabyChicago and Gladiator. So there’s still a good chance of The Shape of Water taking Best Picture without also being named Best Original Screenplay. Of course, Three Billboards is also still a major contender for both Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture.

Other WGA Awards went to the documentary Jane, which was the most glaring nonfiction feature snub by the Academy this year, while the TV movie Flint won for Best Long Form Original script and series The Handmaid’s TaleBig Little LiesVeepBetter Call Saul and Will & Grace were among the other honorees for the small screen.
